The daffodil is our doorside queen;
she pushes upward the sword already,
to spot with sunshine the early green.
--William Cullen Bryant
Our weather turned a little warmer this week,
still cool, but not cold.
But warm enough for us to shed our coats
and feel the hope of spring.
And then Tuesday I saw a robin and some dandelions in bloom.
Spring seemed closer,
but I still didn't want to commit any optimism to the prospect just yet.
But then today, I noticed the shoots of daffodils
rising tender and green from a mat of brown leaves and pine needles.
Perhaps we can start to think spring after all.
