Tiny green clumps of wild onions
dot the landscape every spring
and when the cold wind blows,
their long slender stalks bend easily to the ground.
They aren't very glamorous,
but they are one of the things I consider to be an encouraging sign of spring.
They aren't allowed to live very long in the suburban landscape,
since they are considered weeds.
But they are a member of the amaryllis family,
so welcoming them this time of year
doesn't seem so unreasonable.
